#171: How To Frig Off In The Face Of Adversity w/ Pat Roach aka Randy from The Trailer Park Boys and Sheldon Valleau

0:14

Weird a weird day for me fellows

0:20

sweat equity

1

Speaker 1

0:20

podcast. I'm Eric reading or without loss Smith because he has kids that are sick. And that's what happens. But we're here with a very special guest, Mr. Pat Roach. Thank you better known as Randy from Trailer Park Boys. do my best to not call you Randy. Through the I mean, I answered random my

0:41

habit,

1

Speaker 1

0:41

the hours that I've spent watching Trailer Park Boys it I mean, the other day I said, like BB and I don't even know where I was getting it from until I was like, Oh, you're coming in studio. And that's what I'm repeating all the time. But we really appreciate you coming in.

1

Speaker 1

1:01

So we've also got Joseph percent as our intern that we talked about so much, Pat, I don't I shelf. I don't I didn't catch your last name. Sorry. Hello. Okay. And you're managing sort of situation on the show. I'm a comedian. I've been in the industry for as musician for over 20 years, and now I feel bad. I'm sorry. That's

1:25

all right. You've done your research. That's good to know.

1

Speaker 1

1:28

Well, I did it on Pat. Kinda. So I hope that helps. But uh, yeah, so Pat, you're in town or you were in town doing your Randy's cheeseburger picnic? That's right. Yeah. The crowbar? Yeah.

1:42

So tell us about that.

1

Speaker 1

1:45

Go actually yet, just tell us about what that is. I believe it's some kind of improv show. Right?

2

Speaker 2

1:51

Well, it's a it's a live show that we take on the road. And it's awesome. It's kind of like lots of jokes and games and coffee tested prizes and songs. And a lot of fun. And I mean, shell brings his ukuleles whales on it better than any ukulele player in the world. He's won an award. I think it was from a small town. But he cranks out on that and ukuleles are very cheeseburger picnic. The so it's just it's kind of like a silly, fun show to get out and get away from your real lives that might be maybe more stressful than we care for. So if you come out, let it go and even have a little cheeseburger picnic in the winter. Who cares? Let's just just have some fun. Yeah, well, Randy, kind of brings that party vibe wherever he goes. You know,

1

Speaker 1

2:41

so I can't help but talk about Trailer Park Place. That's because normally the shows a small business entrepreneurship show

1

Speaker 1

2:53

focused a lot on you know, hustle and you know, getting after it and our through way for actors is usually you know, you are your own brand sort of thing you're going to have to hustle

1

Speaker 1

3:05

getting into Trailer Park Boys were you How did that come about for you?

2

Speaker 2

3:10

Well, I knew the director, my Clattenburg and, and I hung out with Rob wells, who's Ricky and JP Trombley. That's Julian, so my Clattenburg would always put a film in a film festival. He was in the industry back in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and he won awards for short films and one year he did one called Trailer Park Boys and asked me to be in it because we'd always sort of figuring out with real video cameras like the tape back in the day like world Oh, look, look at that lymphatic Mike going on in there and we

1

Speaker 1

3:47

got the bad one. I love that you said Frig around, but all we do, that's good.

2

Speaker 2

3:52

That's what that's what how it came to be. And I played a character and a black and white short films that he put into the film festival would have been around 1998 or 9099 I believe and and I played a character named Patrick Lewis had a dog that I let poop on people's lawns and I thought pooping was fine as Patrick Lewis you know, let's fertilizer right but a bunch of these neighbors got together to have my my poor dog Cesar terminated.

2

Speaker 2

4:22

Ricky and Julian where the terminators of dogs but no animals were harmed

4:26

during the film or not.

2

Speaker 2

4:28

But then a director named Barry done, who happens to play Ricky's dad Ray on the show? Oh, really? I didn't know that. He saw that. That short film mean, there was one thing he saw. So he convinced my Kleinberg did they took it on the road and sold it to a network in Canada called showcase. So that was where we got our start six episodes. And after that people seem to like it. So yeah,

1

Speaker 1

4:53

yes, you're missing I mean, normally our director is a friend of our you met john paul. Yes, he came to the crew bar and you know, very similar physique to you

5:05

He's handsome that's what you're saying here. Yes. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

5:07

very handsome guys. Yeah, yeah, sure. Are you guys your little relieved that Joseph does actually know us and all that he wasn't just pretending Yeah, we've gone through

3

Speaker 3

5:19

it that's what I was saying. They were driving around looking for parking I'm like they probably think I'm lying about this all the time. Oh, there is no podcast

5:29

he's a serial killer could be

1

Speaker 1

5:31

Yeah, I was little I was like man I need to get hold of these guys make sure you let them know it's legit That's right.

2

Speaker 2

5:37

No know Joseph was taking great care of us. Well, we've been back here so yeah, we just got back from a Trailer Park Boys cruise and that was out of Tampa and I went to Bahamas was a four day cruise and we did like a number of shows and shell and I did a cheeseburger picnic and and you know had some comedians and Tom Green were on there was on their own

5:58

Canadian all stars. Yeah,

2

Speaker 2

5:59

Doug Benson. He Canadian? No, no, no, I don't know why my funny sweet Yeah, you know a couple bands came along monster truck Beth naked and oh, yeah, so it was a good time. So when you're not doing the cheeseburger picnic, do you do a different show you're doing Do you do any sort of stand up or anything? No, no, I just my main touring is doing the cheeseburger picnic. I do do shows with the guys. Ricky Julian and bubbles they have some we have some live shows that we do normally a Christmas show or like you usually go a couple times a year and you're out on the tour bus and it's a it's an aggressive couple of weeks schedule. That's awesome head back so then in between those do cheeseburger picnics and then do some filming and whatnot for for Trailer Park Boys now if you don't mind me asking how many cruises has there been? This was the first one the very first one and we liked it so there there may be some more it was it seemed to be

6:58

able to provide a nice stories by any chance.

2

Speaker 2

7:01

Well, what stays on the ship is I don't know. Like the stories it's cruises are everybody on one boat and they definitely party at least Trailer Park Boys cruises a parody.

7:15

It's a floating Vegas. Yeah, yeah,

2

Speaker 2

7:17

casino on there. And then, you know, a couple hot tubs and pools and then all these different you know, lounges Are you know theaters and whatnot. So is pretty impressive. I must say they're up in

4

Speaker 4

7:29

the Haven. They're up in the VIP area. I was gonna say how many guests and stuff like that your were amongst the homeowners? I should, you know, no one would recognize me they maybe maybe I had to do 20 selfies just from people that have been to Randy's cheeseburger picnic before. And then had the guts to walk up and say hey, but me and my wife would walk around and we were kind of sleepless and you forget which deck you're on. It's just like I said it's just like Vegas your end up and walking through casinos. Lots of hotel carpets then all sudden an empty deck. And then it's like yeah, it's like the shining this little carpet throw rugs everywhere and

8:07

and if you try and escape you'll die. Yeah,

8:09

exactly. view. Yeah, yeah.

8:11

So pretty decent loading Vegas. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

8:14

I was gonna say that's the level I want to get cruise ship level where the it's the sweat equity podcast cruise. And it's like, Yeah, fuck that. Like, if you get these people to they know that's why they're there and they know where you are and who you are and all that. Oh, it's not a vacation at me. She's

1

Speaker 1

8:31

so I was reading about Trailer Park Boys season 13 Is it true that it's going to be animated? Yes, it is. Oh, that's awesome. It's it's pretty funny. I mean, I'm not the cartoon. Like comedy guy. I don't I'm a fan of the comic acting, you know, as far as what people do with things, but how was that a lot easier on your schedule? I'm sure. Oh, it's it takes a lot less time than for sure. I mean,

2

Speaker 2

9:02

to do a season would probably be about 40 days. But this didn't take long at all. Really? And if you messed it up, they just say okay, you don't just keep it rolling on again. Okay, you finally did it right. Get out. So yeah, but I would take my shirt off

9:20

to get into character

2

Speaker 2

9:20

you know, you missed on like taking shirt or if you know you're you're rolling around, I would roll around on it wasn't the ground and it was actually on carpet looks like so as much easier on the body you know, then then having to roll in the dirt or wrestle Ricky in the dirt. And you know, Ricky he always falls down so much in the show. Yeah, you know so now he's was he attacked it and you know, we we do some recordings, we're we're all there and other times that we can just come in and do it on your own. But if it's sort of like a big scene with a lot of people, they like to have everyone there where, you know, sometimes you might talk over and another person just a little because that's what we do. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

10:02

that's real life. That's what's great about it. Running Trailer Park Boys, the long takes where you guys are going for a minute straight without cutting away. It's not it's like, I'm just did you have any acting, trading training or anything like that? Or do you just kind of step into the character and let it fly? Well, I was in sales,

2

Speaker 2

10:22

right sales and marketing and everyone says sales and marketing people are actors. Yes, for sure. How's business grey couldn't be better. Awesome. But there you go. This, you know, but no real training. It was like our good friend who played Mr. Lee, john Dunsworth. He's trained in theater and film. He taught us a lot of stuff over the years. I mean, I wouldn't even be doing Randy cheeseburger picnics, if it wasn't for all the shows that I've done with him and, and, you know, not making me nervous in front of crowds are having the ability to feel like you can pull off a show. So, yeah, like, a lot of us didn't have training. Some of us did have a little bit, but we just like, like I say, used to free around with video cameras, and way back in the day, like, I mean, I remember my Kleinberg said he goes, Yeah, you guys should be on TV, like your way funnier than some of the real actors that that I've been working with type thing. So it's like, Yeah, whatever. Yeah, we just said no, we all have regular jobs. You know, I sold water. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

11:23

I was reading about that at that was going to be the kind of a hustle angle on it. Where it was like you were working during the first couple seasons of jam Park Boys, right? Well, I think first four seasons, I had a full time job selling water.

11:38

Oh, yeah. How's the regional sales manager suit and tie

3

Speaker 3

11:41

if you still remember and you don't mind? What was your pitch? How? How do you pitch somewhere? Are you thirsty?

11:49

Sound Thursday five some water.

11:51

Wow, look at me. I'm are fully Hey, oh, no,

2

Speaker 2

11:53

but it's it's true. You know, do you like the taste of your music supposed supply? Know, I'll try my want.

12:05

That type of thing. It's all you gotta do. Taste Test. Nice and quiet. Just like

2

Speaker 2

12:09

oh, yeah, but you gotta be nice. The whole idea. I even worked on the trucks delivering those, you know, the big jugs, the big water. Cool. Yeah, that kept you in good shape at the time. I think that's the only reason I have two muscles in my body.

1

Speaker 1

12:24

But, hey, I was watching season one earlier today. And you know, you just you were from the nipples up. Yeah, you look like you're in great shape. All then. You know, the gut was there. But you know, it was I was kind of surprised looking back that it was such a joke. The gut quote unquote, was a joke that I was like, it's not that like crazy of a gut.

2

Speaker 2

12:45

It wasn't it wasn't back then. Hundred 95 pounds when I started. Yeah, I believe.

12:51

I've gained 30 pounds. Yeah.

12:53

Did you gain weight to get the one that got more popular? No. I'm on a seafood diet. I see it. Yeah.

12:59

How's the sushi today, guys?

13:01

Oh, it was good. I had a cheeseburger sushi. Did you really very tasty.

4

Speaker 4

13:06

Of course. There's a weight distribution difference in Canada, and then there's America. Oh, yeah. There are some some size differences of what people consider the norm.

1

Speaker 1

13:18

And for people are for food for people. Oh, yeah. Big time due

13:22

to your food. portions.

1

Speaker 1

13:24

Right? Yeah, it's pretty gross. Here. We have it. For some reason we have this thing where it's, you know, you have to be entirely full or you're not. That's not a meal until you feel sick. It's good to hear that. It's not all over the world, I guess.

1

Speaker 1

13:40

But yeah. So Joseph, you've been tracking them down, hanging out. And you were pushing? They're getting them fired up to do their marketing ideas and stuff. Did you have anything to add to their marketing ideas?

3

Speaker 3

13:58

I in regards to their videos, their Instagram videos, as well as Facebook videos, are they I like them? I was actually able to watch a few of them the other day. The other night actually, as they recorded them in pushing those a lot more slightly abroad. I expands the range. I gotcha.

1

Speaker 1

14:19

So are you guys kind of just doing that yourself for you? Do you have anybody that does that for you? How's that work?

14:27

Shell does? Does a lot of it. Yeah.

4

Speaker 4

14:29

Most of it. I just, you know, I say okay, I got people breathing down my back. Yeah, this show isn't doing well. The show isn't doing well. It's very last minute sales. And a lot of people don't don't understand that. So promoter be like, I need a bit I need something. So then

4

Speaker 4

14:46

when he permits, he'll put his pants on. And then I'll be like, hey, you're sitting here. This is the gag, do this. And then he throws his own flavor on it says Well, what about this and then you know, it can happen within a minute. Sometimes can happen within 15 seconds is one take we can bang off a bunch of videos sometimes. We think too hard, or we're like, in pain on over. Like just miserable. And then it's I have a better chance of taking advantage of him. When he's in that state. One of the biggest videos that was not boosted, got 25,000 now it's at like 35,000 views on Instagram. And it happened really fast and really got a lot of followers out of it.

15:31

He piled a bunch of burger garbage on top of me in a rest stop. Yeah, I just laid on a badge

15:39

has grown and and he didn't want to do it. He said no.

15:43

I did. I am not okay with this. Yeah,

4

Speaker 4

15:45

don't care. And that was the first one that became like this thing where, wow, this is kind of

4

Speaker 4

15:51

it lends itself into the character of him. But it's not. It's not bleeding into like, I'm doing my own stuff. necessarily wasn't in character. Still a promo thing? Oh, he's in character. But it's still it's a promo pit. I gotcha. And it can't be it can't be too much, you know, to to scripted or anything like that. It's just basically we can throw them into situations that are humorous, and a lot of people actually followed to watch those. Yeah, they know that they're in Anchorage. And chances are we're not coming to anger anytime soon. I'd like to do it entertaining. That would be fun to go there. Now. We're talking with Tom well done. Summer. We're hoping to get there.

1

Speaker 1

16:32

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've never been that far north. Yeah, that'd be cool. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I guess a lot of those videos, they're popular because they're, they're real. They seem like they're actually happening, you know, to somebody. Yeah.

16:46

It gives an inside perspective. Yeah.

1

Speaker 1

16:48

People want to see they want to see behind the curtain. You know, they want to they want to know what what's he really like, you know, at its most of the stuff, it's all still, you know, you're still doing it with preparation and thought behind it. It's not necessarily real, but the more real you can make it, the more people are going to like it. Right.

17:10

But, yeah. So, Joseph,

1

Speaker 1

17:15

you ask us a lot of business advice and stuff. And I didn't know if you guys had gotten into business talk or that sort of thing, or what your business itself is like, when you guys are out touring? Is it?

1

Speaker 1

17:31

How are you setting it up? Like a stand up comic? Would? How are you guys going about things with that?

3

Speaker 3

17:36

So like, yeah, that was something I wanted as shallow as in regards to what he does to go about setting the doing the promotions, as well as setting the gigs up for you guys to go to the venues?

4

Speaker 4

17:52

Well, there's an agent. So there's a booking agent that that either

4

Speaker 4

17:58

puts out the word someone might call say, like, hey, I want five shows in this area. And then the agent Okay, do you know any other promoter in that area that we could extend on into these dates, they might say yes or no. might take a little time for the agent to find another promoter they might pick up to three shows. that builds a tour. All of a sudden you get about 12 shows which is about as long as we want to be away from home because the day to day fly in, fly out two weeks, two weeks on two weeks off sort of thing is a nice

4

Speaker 4

18:30

there's a nice schedule that works. You know, I like an oil rig look and I said oh it's what we call patchwork and Alberta where I'm from oil oil sands like guys calm the tar sands Yeah, but you got you two weeks on two weeks off and so you can you can still have a family be away and then you then you're when you're home you're really home

18:53

yeah

4

Speaker 4

18:55

remember in its infancy infancy stages though Yeah. As far as the shift that from the lady and Randy show and and hitting those those markets that were already hit with Lady and then coming back to them with just ranting has been has been more of a challenge sales wise. But the reaction from it and the social media reaction to it is like man, you gotta hit this then we had a hit a promoter that was a K fine. I'm bringing in the Midwest. It doesn't. We're going to sneak around this stuff doesn't get hit anywhere else. They don't have any other acts coming to town. Like these are these are rare places. Yeah, one of them was like our third gig in was was Minneapolis and that was the crowd over 600 people in the caboose. Like we were not expecting that. Because the first show was 150 slammed into a small town bar.

19:48

Lot of fun, intimate crowd. Yeah.

4

Speaker 4

19:50

And so the magic zone seems to be places where people are like, Man, this just there's you're not competing with anything. And they don't they just can't believe that they get to meet you know, trailer park boy fame. Yeah, come to their town and they are by far some of the most appreciative it's not that like, should I be here? Should I went to you know, Jay Z. Yeah. You know,

20:17

it was that are bowling. So yeah, exactly. There's nothing else going on.

20:22

And we might be playing above the bowling alley, then Event Center.

2

Speaker 2

20:24

That's fine. So you can do both? Yeah. So we're here in Ybor City at there at the crossover. You know, we just bumped into a young lady and she's a big fan of the show we said we just did a show a few weeks ago she's like I knew nothing about it and you always hear that yeah people can be frustrating yeah because there is there's so much information flying around

4

Speaker 4

20:48

yeah and business wise and to finish with your question is

4

Speaker 4

20:52

to promoters have their they have their outlets but to for the brand and for what is it is like Trailer Park Boys has its its own demographic for sure is widespread. It's like there's a few dentists there there's some people that are there and they're they're so appreciative they got a dog Yeah, because they don't have they don't have credit. So in the credit world where dentists are you can't have any

21:19

My wife is a dentist Yeah,

21:21

anything bad well that's why you get to do this actually you can say

21:25

I have no cavities. I love her

21:28

whole life has a full time job. That's why I get to go out and do this right. Yeah,

21:30

me too.

4

Speaker 4

21:33

But yeah, as far as that goes, we you know I'm a lot more involved and so is he because of the vids but then with get a lot more involved with the promo these days and that's just the way it is is a lot of people just expect it to just to fill up but you really have to do hit the pavement and we're finding that a lot of

4

Speaker 4

21:51

you know rap stars and all these people like tons of personalized fits. Yeah shout out everywhere and it's the new way to keep content going consuming the content

22:02

Yeah, it's hungry world yeah. Oh yeah. Hungry

4

Speaker 4

22:05

well it's an add world and example are gone and 10 seconds there's a problem with with trying to get people into the show's early so that like they've committed with credit card or something like that, that you've sold the seats because day of show with some of the some of the guys. Some of the, the the demographic. They're going to hit that bomb. Okay, baby. Let's go. Let's go. I'm getting ready. I'm getting ready to hit the ball again. Cable. Yeah, let's go. And then she has the bond and then all sudden they're kind of tired. Like

22:37

this is what Trailer Park Boys.

22:40

Watch the episode called Randy sees burger. Yeah,

22:43

that was pretty funny.

22:44

And you miss out on the walk up? Yeah. So it's Oh, yeah, you plug away as much as you can.

2

Speaker 2

22:51

But we've got the best fans. It's unbelief. Oh, man are so supportive. You know? So it's just, we just need to, you know, foghorn or one of those, you know, we're coming to town. Yeah. Blues Brothers style, you know? Yeah.

23:06

megaphone on the top of stolen copco? Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

23:09

exactly. Where you guys involved in the marketing ideas behind things at all? Or was it just kind of fly by the seat of your pants sort of stuff.

2

Speaker 2

23:17

People normally just ask us for video they want to put on a Facebook or something. So it's, you know? Yeah,

4

Speaker 4

23:24

as far as marketing, it's, we're still, like I said, his infant stages, there's,

23:30

there's still so much interest. So you leave it up to the venue base.

4

Speaker 4

23:33

It's promoters. They want the shows, and they have to, they have to spread that spread the info, if we have to supply some great and then all of a sudden, you know, a lot of people have publicists, right, they have a manager, they have a tour manager, a manager, a publicist, a social media person, they have a whole team. And that's, that's what it most what it takes to keep a popular act, that's going to be like, five 500 Plus, but mostly like 2000 or 3000, where you're gonna be doing, you know, soft cedars and stuff like that you have a whole team. Oh, yeah. And you make fraction of that. Because you're paying out 10 to this. This to the venue. So it's, you know, all these different things a lot easier to do nowadays, you know, with the phone because I can drive and at the same time, be answering emails doing the thing.

24:24

That's nice and say hello, very safe,

24:27

yellow over. Make them you don't have to tell

24:29

it over the day.

4

Speaker 4

24:31

This is the date. I'm filming you go, like from the pastor's right him drive once. And we found this little spot which is pulled over where where he had about, I don't know, 233, 200 300

4

Speaker 4

24:43

feet where he could drive without hitting anything. And he had fallen asleep reading his tour dates at the wheel. We got him driving asleep at the wheel. And you know, and that's how fast things can be. And then I send that off from the road. Yeah.

3

Speaker 3

25:01

So you're basically doing all four of those jobs as one part horribly,

25:06

very thin. Yeah,

25:08

it's really nice to hear that he said he has no clue what's going on. Yeah,

3

Speaker 3

25:13

I was about to say what's the difference then between Trailer Park Boys tour as to you and show

2

Speaker 2

25:21

well with with me and shall it's it's Randy's cheeseburger panic So, you know on there's their shows. It's their tour that and I'm Randy just, I just have to be on the bus. That's just show up to the show. Do that.

2

Speaker 2

25:38

P who cook, do a show shower baby. They like it when I don't shower when I'm greasy. But it's like those like those like for me because they have what y'all saying? They have a tour manager a sound man emerge guy, you know, the promoter? Like there's 10 of us on a bus with 12 bucks, you know, and

25:57

good smelling right?

2

Speaker 2

25:58

Oh, man, lots of friends. That's for sure. But that's it's, you know, a whole little city moving to place to place. Right. Sean, I just get into a rental car. You know, my show fits into a deed is back.

1

Speaker 1

26:12

Sorry, you're flying in renting cars, and you're flying out to your spot. And that's how we do it. No big dog Sprinter van or something. Sometimes we

4

Speaker 4

26:20

have to drop the car off fly again. Get another car in the same same country, but okay, it's just a few. Don't want to take the car so far that they're going to charge $1,000

1

Speaker 1

26:35

Yeah, we get their own empty tank and it's $8 a gallon to refill it. That's right. And a service charge.

4

Speaker 4

26:40

Well, we were just we just went to book a car and Canada from Vancouver to Calgary. And it was $5,200 for the car we wanted. That's like cross country,

26:49

right? Yeah, right. No couple know it's one bronze. Oh, I totally know Canadians geography. Yeah.

26:58

It's actually not that bad. It's only a seven hour drive. But it's over

1

Speaker 1

27:02

to that. So that's the most Canadian thing ever is not that bad. It's an 11 hour drive. Yeah,

27:08

that's not the Continental

2

Speaker 2

27:10

is that just a rocky? It's like five hours for everything to go to the grocery store sort of thing? No, no, we're not that bad. But this is this tours got a number of dates so and then did start to Vancouver and go to Vancouver Island and in through the mountains and up in Alberta and do a bunch.

4

Speaker 4

27:26

And then you know, thousand dollars on one company? Yeah, Google the next one. It's 890.

27:31

Right. So we went with the eight nine. Yeah,

27:33

so you gotta you gotta dig in.

1

Speaker 1

27:35

Oh, yeah. You probably got to watch out. They see a celebrity and they think you know, they don't pay attention. They'll charge them whatever, you know. Charge out the ass. I don't know how

2

Speaker 2

27:44

it works. But that's you have to keep your expenses down when you're touring. Because it's amazing how quickly things that up. Yeah.

1

Speaker 1

27:52

So when you're not at home? I mean, everything's out of pocket. Yeah, that's how many how many cities did you do for the Randy's cheeseburger? picnic door? I don't know.

28:02

We don't know. This is

4

Speaker 4

28:03

like our one year anniversary. Oh, yeah. Yeah, like to the day could pretty close.

2

Speaker 2

28:07

So I bet you we did a book 50 wouldn't surprise me. Like that.

28:12

So you're doing it as kind of an ongoing thing. You just kind of pick it up when you want. Yeah,

2

Speaker 2

28:16

and it's really nice. You can change it as you go. Like we get ideas Stephanie and come up with some different contests. You know, okay, I used to have a contest of pin the tail on the brandy instead of pin the tail on the donkey. You know, I didn't like it because I didn't like stick in my Bama. Yeah, but those are the things that you come up with different and it evolves and you know, if there's certain things in the news, you can grow them at the time or, or whatnot. But you know, I will continue to say Frank Yeah.

2

Speaker 2

28:47

To wear white pants and have my belly like these are the things that you know, you gotta stick with how many pairs of the white pants do you have?

28:55

I not enough

2

Speaker 2

28:57

coming real on? Yeah, markers leak in the backlog. It ruin your white paper. Yeah,

29:01

white pants. They get dirty.

2

Speaker 2

29:03

Like first, I think five seasons. I only had one pair Really? And they were torn. I rip the crotch right? Oh, my mom was so the month.

29:11

Well

29:13

Well, that's Yeah, that's awesome.

1

Speaker 1

29:16

So, uh, you know, is there anything else you wanted to talk about? Just the viewers but in some some stuff in slack there earlier today. Oh, I'm

29:29

put you on the spot. Yeah, sorry. Thanks. Geez. I haven't even done any sound effects.

29:33

I'm gonna put the crickets on for you. So I

3

Speaker 3

29:35

did have a question from a friend of mine. While I get my mind together. What's your favorite cheeseburger? My favorite cheeseburger? Like what?

2

Speaker 2

29:43

What kind? Bacon mushrooms? How would your perfect burger I do like I prefer burgers that are not really really thick and rather like to thinner patties the one thick Patty of the same thickness is the tech Patty Okay, and I like it wouldn't they get a nice if there are fried it's nice when they get that nicer to crispiness on the outside of the patties. And of course you put one slice of cheese on each maybe to you know just because cheesy need to get the right cheese to meet the bond ratio

2

Speaker 2

30:24

love the bacon as long as it's crispy. Yeah has to be crispy and you know you can throw some onion rings on their stuff like that but I don't like a one of the burgers like super thick like that where you cannot get your mouth around like to me it's like just a mess. Right so like instead of giving me that one big burger Give me five little ones yeah

1

Speaker 1

30:45

those are just for like the advertising that the you know the right the picture on the menu that or whatever they want to just show Look how tall are burgers? I can eat that

30:55

I know exactly enjoyable I'm a fan of the the brioche buns there nice and soft

31:01

philosophy brioche

31:03

french

31:05

fries

31:06

you'd call it brioche j down here

31:07

but I

31:08

out to tell sure never heard it called nobody's gonna call you out on that

2

Speaker 2

31:14

so where you guys were you headed to Next we go to Vancouver British Columbia that's where the this next part of the cheeseburger

1

Speaker 1

31:22

mags any any break from that you guys gonna go home and chill out for a little while or anything?

2

Speaker 2

31:27

No we're we're doing another couple of weeks so go home like April 1 so so yeah then we were off for about another 10 days or something then go back out again. This is the time the year for touring everyone's you know not on vacations are not at their cottage they're not going to festivals and all the until the summer so we we fell you know that generally from October right through to I guess April May that's that works good. And then after

31:58

that you're recording for the show. Yeah,

2

Speaker 2

32:00

we doing some recording and then you know I do some festivals I'm emceeing some festivals and things like that. So the summertime is festival pilot people go to that stuff. But

32:13

they're not be wearing a shirt for those. Oh no, it's too hot fire

2

Speaker 2

32:15

sunscreen. Maybe I'll wear my smokey hat. You never know. Keep the sign off.

1

Speaker 1

32:21

How long did did you and john Dunsworth do the touring for probably about

32:28

1214 years something like

3

Speaker 3

32:30

that. Oh, really? Yeah. What made you guys want to start touring and start doing that? An agent?

32:39

Just talk to your

32:39

day.

2

Speaker 2

32:40

Do you guys want to do a live show? And we said we don't have a live show. should write one. People want you.

3

Speaker 3

32:48

So what's what's what's that process like done writing a show coming about?

3

Speaker 3

32:54

The material in regards to it. Even with the chief? Randy's cheeseburger picnic?

2

Speaker 2

32:59

Johnson a lot more Mr. Les john Dunsworth. When was the lady and Randy show on the road and

2

Speaker 2

33:06

but we come up with a lot of stuff in the car driving from place to place. It's really, yeah, like we'd always have like a clipboard with paper and make notes, you know, and add things and you know, he read the newspaper every day. So you can make a joke about things like I mean, really Trailer Park Boys is not supposed to be highly political or anything you're just supposed to be a bunch of little budget cuts people in a park that they get into shit, but they each other enough? Yeah, yeah. And they try to, you know, get along and and like, there's still is love, you know, right? You know, it's, that's kind of the sweet St. And

1

Speaker 1

33:44

there's something weird about like, I don't know, if it's like running or like moving in a car. For some reason, I seem to get very, like creative ideas come to me a lot more when I'm driving. Maybe it's because I can't write it down. And then it's just going to be fleeting. And I think it's a great idea or something. But it seems pretty common that like driving in a car is very creative. spark or something? Yeah,

2

Speaker 2

34:08

I just like being in like me for this cheeseburger picnic is that just came up with a bunch of ideas. Like, it'd be fun to have some contests. But regular picnic contests. You can't have in a venue like you can't have a potato sack. Yeah, because someone's going to wipe out hit a table and crack their head and die. Right? You know, or, you know, lucky and insurance, you know, you've got electronics, like, you know, monitors, guitars, microphones, you know, so a balloon toss back and forth. Yeah, if it blows up and it gets on electronics that he comes across all he's got to sit there and kind of go, Oh, yeah. But I could do this and this and this. So then you come up with those ideas. And then it's what else? You know, it's always different things from the show. And you'll often times fans will shout something out sometimes. And I'm just like, that's right. Holy cow almost forgot about that. You write it, write it down, and then it's becomes part of it. And that's why it's nice. It's organic. It grows. Right. So

35:01

yeah.

3

Speaker 3

35:03

I attended the show at crowbar. And that was the first time seeing it. And I was highly entertained. I had a really good time. Good. I went in, not knowing what I was getting myself into at all. And yeah, just came out to be like a variety slash sketch show. And it was hysterical. I had a very good time. Thank you.

1

Speaker 1

35:26

I did I saw the name and I said Randy's cheeseburger picnic. What could that even be? And good thing you went to tell me? What does it mean? It was I was having a hard time like okay, so he's gonna he's gonna grill for everybody's gonna make his own cheeseburgers. True. Yeah,

35:44

that's I thought his own common question. Yeah. Yeah.

35:46

I mean, so you do a lot of like, audience interaction stuff in the show. Oh, yes. Yeah. Yeah. You got to involve the fan. Yeah,

4

Speaker 4

35:54

it's very interactive. And there's a lot of even me, Jericho people. There's there's a lot of hysterical people that want to come up in the console. Yeah. We have our memories of certain places by certain fans like, Oh, yeah, that one place? What was that place? The girl that Gazelle that fell down? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Got it was so wasted that you had to hold him by his belt. Get off the stage over time. Oh, yeah.

36:19

Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, so yeah,

1

Speaker 1

36:21

that would be my favorite part is just the human interaction, the people watching. I mean, people just, it's unbelievable. People flip a switch. When it's like, oh, it's about me. It's like, I'm gonna, you know, this is my moment sort of thing. It's like, Whoa, K, you went overboard, right. I mean, it was a whole different

36:38

world of

4

Speaker 4

36:41

like, for comedy, so people used to sitting down, and they know that they're going out for comedy. And they've chances are they've been out for comedy used to one person. Right? This is, this is one person with me. So I come out by myself. And I do 20 minutes stand up on myself. That That for me is Terry refines musician who's used to having a band, I can lead the band. And I wasn't necessarily the mouthpiece, my brother, bass player, he he leads the band as far as it's discussing things. I'm the writer and the voice. But to then come out to that and then to find out the man.

4

Speaker 4

37:20

Three quarters of these people have never been to a comedy show before. Yeah, and they're in rock seating. They're not in seats there and Roxy Yeah, stage. You know, not sitting or standing.

4

Speaker 4

37:33

Standing Oh, yeah. Like they have to show this guy in the front rows just mountain so much. You know, I called him and we were in Minnesota land of 10,000 Lakes and the everything was about walleye on the menu. I call him a shit walleye. And I kicked this empty solo cup out of his hand. And there's just this breath in the whole place just

37:56

and then they

4

Speaker 4

37:56

bow and they loved it. And then he shut up. Yeah, to but the heckling stopped. And you can actually get it away from the whole

4

Speaker 4

38:06

people that are always like looking ready. Yeah, he's the antagonist on the show that only last so long until the public itself they'll if you point them out, the people surrounding that person will drive them enough.

1

Speaker 1

38:19

I didn't think about that. Like people seem he was like a villain. Really,

38:24

side to side with those the other three some people

38:27

like Ricky so they don't like Well, yeah,

38:29

but you

1

Speaker 1

38:30

would understand that it's a TV show. But I mean, God that's I mean,

4

Speaker 4

38:35

but they still want to in front of their friends and stuff like that. They still want to have that. Yeah, heart. So one of the funny things is is like we were at the in Calgary near my near my hometown. So they came they used to use our our houses is kind of a hub when they're out west. And so they were doing a gig there and we would come to the show and just kind of help out with you know, the drink making sure the drinks didn't have alcohol in them for like he because he actually didn't drink and that sort of thing real I had a couple And so yeah, he would always say he didn't

1

Speaker 1

39:06

drink ever or like because he played what the greatest all time drunk driver like, I mean, he's a he was a mean is it is a mean. I mean, just the best like I don't Oh, yeah, that's mind blowing to me, but I'm talking about

4

Speaker 4

39:22

but these you know, this, this guy in the back and I watched him, he sat there and he yelled out a few a few lady like over and over and over until like, he gets the stairs. And then he went like this.

39:36

And he how he held his birds in the air.

39:38

Those just listening and title fingers

39:40

up in the air. The whole show whole show. He

4

Speaker 4

39:43

had his middle fingers up in the air for the entire show, like, unbelievable wasn't drinking it. I mean, it stopped for a drink. And then he gets to say, I fingered on the whole time. And that's where you get that division. Yeah, between ego protagonists, and I'm siding with the other guys. And, uh, you just paid 20 bucks. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

40:03

and we don't care because we're not taking sides. I'm friends with the guys like, that's so weird, man. Well, I mean, it was great having you guys. Is there anything else you want to touch on? Joseph, sir? Nothing? No, not currently, I

3

Speaker 3

40:21

got all the questions that I really wanted to get out of you guys in regards to the different aspects of what it's like with you with Shell and what it's like with the Trailer Park Boys. What about on your own show? What's it like being with Randy

40:37

a bat? You know,

4

Speaker 4

40:38

man, this is this is i'm i've been road Road Dogg for a long time. That's why we met is because we had the same agent at the time. And they were being sent up northern Alberta, where the best demographic was to start their their offshoot on the show. Because that's where you have 20 30,000

4

Speaker 4

40:59

men away from from home, up and oil camps. So yeah, binge watching seasons, this is before Netflix and all that, but people would bring their DVDs and that there's a lot of them from the east coast to because of the show from the east coast. So that started there. My brother and I had already toured, like the world we've had already lived in France had already done England and all these places, and all over North America and our band. And so we went up there and our motorhome met them in a keg in like a steakhouse. And we said Who are these ship? Yeah. And we were like, who will easily

2

Speaker 2

41:36

haven't gotten rid of them since, like, you know, as you know,

41:39

way to latch on man, could you keep

4

Speaker 4

41:41

your keep your, you know, set an hour and 15 minutes because obviously you guys can have to pay three times.

41:48

But

4

Speaker 4

41:48

yeah, we but we ended up forming a great friendship. And then you know, years and years and years and years and years, and then, you know, the passing of, of john Dunsworth called me up, I've been off the road for a long time I don't want to cafe and was was so chef and was doing my own thing would lift up the delicious meal. Oh, man, thank you. And you know,

4

Speaker 4

42:10

we got girlfriends and, and kids and stuff like that. And then all of a sudden, your your tour keys get taken away. You get different jobs. And then all of a sudden, he calls me up, you know, about a year after John's passing and says, Do you think we can make a go at this? And I said, All right. He's like, you gotta open and then be my side guy. And write a couple different songs. And

4

Speaker 4

42:36

so we've been but yeah, we've been at it for a year, this is the anniversary and it's been going great. Where I mean, there's, it's, it's starting to get to the point where

4

Speaker 4

42:46

we can go near other areas are starting to meet promoters, stuff like that to get it. Mm hmm. And that will be less less work on our side as far as having to plug what this is. And that's not that's not anybody fault, really. It's just timing. And, and being able to like, we have to take some of our footage together. mash it up, get it out there so that people can see that people lose their minds at this stuff.

43:12

So they can see what a cheese

4

Speaker 4

43:14

right so the point where I'm I'm looking into

43:19

you know, your protection,

1

Speaker 1

43:21

not visible. They're gonna say change your name to cheeseburger or something. Yeah,

43:24

no, no, I don't need me. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

43:27

I just like seeing guys being able to go out and do what they like to do as a job. You know, it's like, you know, we're not fun. It's great

2

Speaker 2

43:36

to meet the fans and to get the Oh yeah, it's very enjoyable. And that

4

Speaker 4

43:41

creates a great he's a he's a champion in the meet and greets. He's very personable. There is a

4

Speaker 4

43:48

there is a sort of a parallel thing with him and his character like they are different people. But they they they both are kind of hard. Right. And that's why it's it's pretty easy for him to pull from the character that they'll same while the same room. lot of the same things are from the same spot. And he has a good person to tour with them. We have a lot of fun. We poke fun of each other all the time. We got each other's backs. And we are

1

Speaker 1

44:10

you wouldn't be able to tour if you can poke fun anytime. You're in the same spot like all the time on my face if you hate the person. Oh, there's times where you know, I've been thinking about murder more. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, real quick. What is all right, well, let's let you tell the murder story. But I would what would you do that would really piss you off?

44:33

Talk fart like he's got the

2

Speaker 2

44:38

bad and the know when He does it because he starts to giggle. killed himself. I'm talking and Steve's gonna pull your shirt. Oh, yeah. And then he can talk like, there it goes again. Mike.

44:53

are you sir? Oh, boy.

44:55

And you're hungover. I could see that when you're hungover being Gregory

45:00

all Yeah. And you're like going further along with the Satan boys? Yeah. Yeah,

45:08

I also love that you do it? I mean, you know, I think

4

Speaker 4

45:12

it's my enjoyment. Cuz I'm probably in a miserable mood to and there's no sense both of us being miserable. Why don't I make myself how manifest misery. Exactly right.

45:23

So ferreting. And

4

Speaker 4

45:24

so my thing is sure, like, just a little bit of fucking help, please.

4

Speaker 4

45:31

Help. Like we take a wrong turn in Toronto. He's been there a lot way more than I have and then we make a wrong turn. Google's fuck me over and I'm like, Okay, you got to get on your phone and find out and look at zoom in to see like how we can get back because we just missed the

45:46

he will let me use sir but

4

Speaker 4

45:48

he know that he just takes his legs and he doesn't want it because you know what? It's it's work.

45:55

Guy real real quick. No, I don't like Sarah.

46:00

If that doesn't work, then I tried That's right.

46:02

There's no there's no airport.

46:05

That's when the vein of mind for how I got it. Yeah,

46:07

and see my totally get

46:08

it. I totally get it and then

46:10

we're fine. We get the airport We're fine. Or he

46:13

loses

2

Speaker 2

46:14

his hand. Right hand? I do not ever.

46:19

Life. And I have

46:21

that is Yeah, that some about getting in your personal space. That'll really just get to

2

Speaker 2

46:26

one time I choked on a piece of gum. Let's tell a story and there's up to these fans in a barn. Shaolin was talking to a policeman who was at the bar and I just was breathing in and out GM went down my throat was choking I was like I was looked at the two fans and I was like these guys aren't going to know what it was I turned to shall I do it?

46:45

Are you serious as it

46:49

turned around and gave me the Heimlich maneuver

46:53

your life right now

46:54

well no I would have went to the policeman

46:59

said to well done

47:01

but it was all over like a matter of 15 seconds and I

4

Speaker 4

47:04

tried to help you with air air and blood flow to the head yeah job as well to to increase it or decrease right oh if I have to

47:14

Joe shells shells got my bad that's good. Yeah,

1

Speaker 1

47:16

I'm glad you guys get along. I mean, yeah, I can't imagine. I don't know of any of my friends that I could do that with at this point and have to be a business relationship or it's like

1

Speaker 1

47:27

anyways, Alright guys, we'll call it there. I mean, I really appreciate it is a big deal for us. I'm really sad that my co host and director couldn't be here but they're definitely gonna hear it and be jealous Tell him to forgot I'm going to tell him or for her at all. Right.
